AI for Scientific Discovery -- Microsoft's Vision for the Future | Part 2

This is Part 2 of our series drawn from Microsoft President Brad Smith's conversation on AI strategy with former Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, held in late February 2025 in New York.
AI's expanding role in science
AI's ability to process vast datasets quickly is reshaping scientific discovery. In biology, tools like Google DeepMind's AlphaFold have mapped millions of protein structures, work that would have taken decades using traditional methods; Microsoft's own AI for Science initiative supports similar research into genetic markers, biochemical modelling and faster drug development.
In chemistry, AI is helping researchers predict molecular properties, design new compounds and optimise reactions — including identifying sustainable alternatives to rare, expensive materials for batteries and electronics. In physics, AI is powering simulations once thought computationally impossible, from cosmic pattern detection to fusion energy research, with Microsoft's Azure Quantum Elements combining AI and quantum computing to accelerate the work.
Universities as the engine room
Smith stressed that university research remains the primary source of AI breakthroughs, with many influential models starting as academic projects. Rather than compete directly with research labs, as Google DeepMind does, Microsoft focuses on providing the cloud infrastructure — Azure AI and Azure Quantum Elements — that lets researchers everywhere make their own breakthroughs.
The takeaway
AI's role in science is just beginning, and Microsoft's infrastructure-first approach is designed to keep breakthrough tools in the hands of scientists and researchers, not just large tech companies — a trend EngageRM sees playing out in sports technology too.
