The Battle for Customers is Outside the Arena

A team's biggest competition for customer experience often isn't a rival on the scoreboard — it's every other brand a fan interacts with day to day. Amazon's personalised recommendations, IKEA's immersive stores and app, and Hilton's frictionless loyalty experience have all reset what "good service" means, and sports fans now hold their favourite teams to the same standard.

Why this matters

Acquiring a new customer costs up to six or seven times more than retaining an existing one, yet many sports organisations still interact with their entire fan database in exactly the same generic way — usually because customer data sits in silos, and culture isn't yet built around the fan.

What to do about it

The fix starts with centralising customer data in a single CRM so every department — customer service, ticketing, marketing — sees the same view of each fan, and building a genuinely customer-centric culture from leadership down, backed by real feedback data rather than guesswork.

Fan loyalty in sport runs deeper than in most industries, but it isn't unconditional — a single bad experience can still cost you a fan. Treating retention with the same care as acquisition is what separates organisations that compound their fanbase over time from those that don't.
